Join SAMH and support mental health awareness with ‘Meerkat at the Mercat’

Mercat Shopping Centre is demonstrating its continued support of community initiatives this weekend with the ‘Meerkat at the Mercat’ event, hosted by the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH). The SAMH will be at the shopping centre raising awareness about mental health, providing insightful wellbeing workshops for all ages.

From 11am until 4pm on Saturday 15 February, shoppers at Mercat will be able to take part in a number of fun activities all designed to help with recognising good mental health practices. These include learning mindfulness techniques, the Hula Health challenge, and a craft station where visitors can build their own wellbeing box.

People will also be able to find out more information about the SAMH, which provides an incredible service for the area, working with adults and young people to offer mental health social care support.

Stephen Roberts, centre manager at Mercat Shopping Centre, said he is delighted to be given the opportunity to help raise awareness and show their support for the charity, and further boost the profile of the SAMH. “Mental health needs to be spoken about openly and honestly, in order to break the stigmas and help individuals who are experiencing difficulties.

“The Scottish Association for Mental Health is an essential service across Scotland, and it is actively helping to break down barriers and encourage conversations,” Stephen added. “ The teams across the country do a phenomenal job, and as a pillar of the Kirkcaldy community we feel it is important to show our support to this worthy cause, and mental health narrative, so that people in our community know they are not alone.”

The SAMH was first founded in 1923 and is the national mental health charity in Scotland. Chelsea Graham, Practitioner for the Fife Services, said: “Having been in the Mercat for the last couple of years doing a general wellbeing stall, I thought it was time to do something more interactive with all ages. It’s really great being able to have fun while learning in our local town centre about mental wellbeing.”

The Scottish Association for Mental Health will be at Mercat Shopping Centre on Saturday 15th February between 11am and 4pm, for a day of activities and workshops designed to raise awareness of mental health, and the work the SAMH does.
